The reel brothers
Coen fans can relive their films with Adam Nayman's comprehensive commentary from 'Blood simple' (1985) to 'Hail Caesar!' (2016) in this sumptuous 320 page book. I enjoyed the format of the title because it delivers more than just a look at the brother's output by the author, there are several Q&A style interviews with professionals who help make the Coen's films so enjoyable, people like composer Carter Burwell, cinematographer Roger Deakins, production designer Jess Goncher and storyboard artist Todd Anderson.
Nayman considers each production in detail though unfortunately there isn't a plot synopsis only the release date, budget, distributor and cast. I found his analysis very readable with reference to the brothers unique way of directing (for example, absolutely no deviation from the script) working with the actors and crew and how industry and media considered each new release. Throughout the book there are plenty of film stills, sometimes big across a spread, providing the visual interest.
It's interesting that some side features aren't mentioned in the Contents, like the four spreads called Friends of the Coens: Frances McDormand; George Clooney; JK Simmons; Tilda Swinton; each has a whole page photo and a brief comment from them about working with the brothers. Another feature are several single pages with simple fun graphics that display references to the films like the use of pop music, books that inspired the Coens, dreams or thoughts from the heroes and villains.
The book is a fascinating look at two brothers who manage, year after year, to direct great films.
