The eyes have it

Brad Wilson manages to take quite remarkable animal photos. He brings them into a studio and positions them in front of a black backdrop to precisely capture every bit of fur and skin. It's the heads that fascinate Wilson, especially the eyes, which, now and again, you can catch a silhouette of the photographer.

The ninety-four pictures are a mix of four-legged jungle animals, tree-living primates, various birds, snakes and the only two water creatures, a king penguin and an alligator. The book's landscape spreads  (about twenty-eight inches wide) has a stunning profile shot of the alligator's head. The heads of other animals and birds like chimpanzees, tigers, lions, white rhinoceros, cockatoos, owls, or a lemur are equally remarkable when seen with this amount of detail.

What I really liked about these photos was their naturalness, none of these creatures looked threatening at all. This is the animal world at peace and it's a tribute to Wilson's photographic skill that he manages to capture this. I was also struck by how clean they all look, no doubt their keepers made sure everyone was looking in tip-top condition.

The book's production enhances the photos. Printed by Damiani with an impressive 250 screen (most image books stick to 170) on a lovely matt art paper. It all helps to make these photos of individual creatures quite wonderful.
