Magazine man (4/5)

The first few pages in the book have short essays and photos of Kane but the book has no page numbers.

A monograph of Art Kane's photos will interest any editorial photographer. As a magazine designer, I was aware of his work decades ago. He had worked, early in his career, as a designer and I always thought his photos were very graphic,  shooting images that obviously belonged on a spread with maybe a headline and some text. The book is full of stunning images that have a distinctive editorial feel about them.

It is unfortunate that, though the book is printed on a lovely matt paper (with a two hundred screen) I thought the editorial format could have been more professional. Wouldn't any monograph present an artist's work historically so that any changes in style would be noticeable over the years, in this book Kane's work is just mixed up.

A real annoyance is that photos have no captions, the reader has to go to eight pages at the back of the book to find the thumbnail in the Image Index. The captions could easily be under each photo in the book to avoid the reader constantly flipping backward and forward to get some details about a photo.

There are no page numbers in the book, yet on the last page of the Image Index there is a reference by page number to fifteen photos, at the front of the book, of Kane, as portraits or working.

A book of wonderful photos presented in a flawed editorial format.
