The latest 64 Masterpieces series (each book has 64 pictures) looks at Swiss/German painter Klee (1879-1940) with some of his best and most popular pictures. He was an unusual artist because he didn't develop a particular style but tried various abstract and slightly figurative works and this is probably why he was so influential for other artists. There are three whole pages of essays in the book and all the paintings are captioned and many of them give more detail with a 'The story behind this painting' panel.
I thought the book (and others in the series) would interest the general reader and also be a worthwhile addition to high school libraries.
