The latest edition of Robert Adams famous book has been re-edited from previous editions. Originally published by Aperture in 1985 as 'Summer nights' and revised in 2009 by Aperture/Yale Uni Press but now titled 'Summer nights, walking'. This new, eighty-four-page revised and enlarged Steidl copy has work taken by Adams between 1976 and 1982.
The sixty-nine photos perfectly capture the feel of an evening stroll in the countryside and in Longmont, Colorado, where Adams used to live. Street lights, gas stations, houses, the moon and the setting sun gave enough of a glow to allow him to reveal the changing patterns of dusk and the almost black of night.
These remarkable photos are enhanced by the book's production. The sequencing of the photos offers a visual contrast on many spreads. Steidl's 175-screen quadratone printing (using four colors) captures the various shades of grey and black on the perfect matt paper. The area of the generous white margins is very similar to the area of each photo.
This new 'Summer nights, walking' is a wonderful re-issue of a classic photobook.
