Black cowboys and their rodeo culture: who knew? I certainly didn't and I had to check the net to get some background but Ivan McClellan's 'Eight seconds' book of photos provides plenty of visual detail. They capture the black cowboy lifestyle of caring for horses and other farm animals, teaching their children riding skills, and presenting parades through local towns, in the latter part of the book there are plenty of rodeo action photos. Even for the youngsters, two photos show a young boy wearing a crash helmet and in the other a youngster surviving on the back of a ram in the rodeo ring. The book's title relates to the amount of time a rider has to stay on a bucking bull or horse, no easy task as the photos of riders being thrown off reveal.
The 118 photos were mostly taken in the West, especially Oklahoma and Texas. Unfortunately, there are no page numbers so the back page of captions isn't very helpful for finding the four photos of rising Black cowgirl star Kortnee Solomon.
