Passing by

Lise Sarfati took these photos between 2012 and 2013 in Los Angeles as an example of photographic serendipity. She selected various streets and frequently a corner and let the camera just record what happened. Most of the photos include one passer-by and they are captured in the way that I thought was very reminiscent of Gregory Crewdson's tableau photos so that the people are frozen within the image, though unlike Crewdson's photos the people here were all moving when Sarfati took the photo and they all appear to be completely oblivious of her camera.

This street scene experiment produces some fascinating images, especially the few that include colorful signage and sometimes older buildings that have wonderfully textured walls but I was rather disappointed that there are only twenty-seven photos (all in color except two). The book though, is a handsome production with excellent paper, it comes in a slip-case and its large size allows the photos to be ten inches wide on the page and printed with a 175 screen.
