Autodidact 4/5

Car drivers usually have a vehicle that reflects their personality and Clark Winter's photos search out these characteristics, though not every photo in the book shows the owners either inside or outside their car. The seventy-eight photos (with nineteen in colour) were mostly taken in America but there were others from Italy, Spain, France, China and Morocco.

Oddly, not every picture shows a car or cars, the one from Morocco shows a farmer astride a donkey, a Chinese one shows several cyclists leaving a factory and a very small drive-in church in Ohio hasn't a car in the frame (perhaps it wasn't a Sunday). The selection of drivers and sometimes passengers tend to be close-ups so you can see their facial expressions and body language and only part of the car, others show the complete vehicle and the surrounding environment of a road in a city, town or countryside.

Overall, I thought it was an interesting selection of photos but rather let down by too many non-car ones. It's a nicely produced book with semi-matt paper for the two hundred screen photos.
