Petal power 5/5

I always thought flowers were a good start to get a grip on watercolor painting. They are irregular shapes, unlike the man-made world of vertical and horizontal edges, bright and vibrant colors and maybe best of all lots of petals actually change color which is ideal as it's not too difficult to blend colors with watercolor paint. Charles Reid is the perfect teacher to get you started. At first glance you might think his paintings look sort of messy but look closer and you'll see that the compositions and use of color are very professional.

I've several of his books and they usually start with the basics like drawing, brush work, color mixing, negative and positive shapes et cetera. As this book is about flowers there are plenty of step by step exercises on how to handle specific types and then other elements are introduced like vases, fruit, plates and tables. Every page has at least one illustration.
