Bad guys lose (5/5)

Right The first Thames & Hudson book. published in 2020
(ISBN 978-0500252451).

This is the second murder maps book from the T&H. The first, published in 2020, covered Europe, North America and Australia. This USA title revisits crime scenes from the Civil War to World War Two and divides the country into four areas. The Introduction details the advance of technology to help catch the bad guys and importantly a 1929 commission suggested the police should be much more professional in their approach to solving crime (fewer beatings and more detection).

The book's editorial format follows the style of the first book and I think it's worth mentioning the excellent look of the pages created by London-based designer Anil Aykan. Each murder is self-contained and starts on a spread with copy, historic photos and newspapers, maps and a really clever idea,  computer-generated diagrams showing where the murders were committed and the bodies found. Comprehensive captions provide background detail to the hundreds of images.

I thought the highly visual feel of the book lifts it above similar titles that are just text-based.
